Other Possible Contenders in BoQ Creation
3. Architects and Engineers
While Quantity Surveyors are the primary BoQ providers, architects and engineers can also play a role, especially in smaller or less complex projects. Architects, with their understanding of the design, can contribute to the BoQ by providing detailed drawings and specifications. They're intimately familiar with the project's aesthetics and functional requirements. However, their cost estimating skills might be limited.
Similarly, engineers, particularly civil and structural engineers, can provide valuable input on the quantities of structural elements such as steel and concrete. Their technical knowledge is essential for accurately quantifying these critical components of the project. It's often a collaborative effort, with the architect and engineer working together to provide the necessary information for the BoQ.
In some cases, design-build firms may handle the BoQ internally, utilizing their in-house architects, engineers, and cost estimators. This integrated approach can streamline the process and improve communication between the design and construction teams.
However, even when architects and engineers contribute, it's generally recommended to have a QS review and finalize the BoQ to ensure accuracy and completeness. It's always good to have a second pair of eyes, especially when it comes to financial matters. A cross check from QS is always useful.
